Opportunities and Careers for Job Seekers in Kuwait's Oil Industry.

Oil and gas are found all over the world - often offshore - and our populations rely on these fuel sources to heat our homes, power our factories, and sustain our modern culture. Petroleum engineers work to reduce the impact on the environment while securing the resources needed to power our world. Their engineering and technical roles are very important. They work closely with geologists and environmental specialists in teams, as well as engineers who have the specialties needed to get the job done.

Overview of Kuwait's Oil Industry and Job Market

Kuwait's economy is based on the oil production and refining industries. These industries generate 92% of the national income. Industry growth, and proven oil reserves amount to about 9 billion tons (10% of the world's oil reserves). The country produces about 100 million tons of oil annually.

Jobs in Kuwait are available in the oil sector, construction workers, programmers, and holders of some other skilled professions are needed. The main problem of the state is the huge dependence of the economy on the oil sector, which accounts for more than half of the country's GDP and more than 90% of the budget revenues.

A significant decline in oil prices over the past few years has forced the Kuwaiti government to urgently diversify its economy, which may create additional jobs, including for expatriate workers.

Petroleum engineers develop and use different methods to extract oil and gas. They may inject water, chemicals, gasses, or steam into an oil reservoir to force more oil out. Petroleum engineers also research and adapt existing technology to help improve production efficiency and reduce the cost of drilling and production operations.

Some petroleum engineers focus on production problems, identifying, testing, and implementing methods to improve oil and gas production. Or they may focus on economics, helping the team evaluate the optimal number of wells for a particular location or operation. An engineer may also focus on safety or maintenance support, identifying and planning upgrades to equipment or systems that are currently in place.

Diverse Career Paths in Kuwait's Oil Sector

Good working conditions and salaries are available only to experienced, highly qualified professionals with the appropriate education. Salary expectations can be high, but if you have neither experience in the oil and gas industry nor education, you can work, for example, as a helper on a drilling rig. That’s one of the entry-level positions. Their duties include cleaning equipment and the site, inspecting equipment, assisting the crew on duty, helping to transport equipment and units, and performing other tasks assigned by the staff. After 6-8 months of working as a helper, you can be promoted to third assistant driller. An oil worker without a full-fledged education can be promoted to the position of a team leader (supervisor) at most. Job market trends include these positions.

If you have an education in the oil and gas industry, you can get a job as a petroleum engineer. Such specialists are employed both directly at oil and gas production facilities and in consulting companies, government organizations, and educational institutions. Petroleum engineers research for the exploration and development of fields, oil and gas production, develop construction projects for oil and gas industry enterprises, and manage the drilling of oil and gas wells. They also develop equipment used in oil and gas fields: drilling tools, oil and gas storage tanks, lifts, floating drilling platforms, and devices for developing oil production from oil sands. There are also management and leadership positions in the oil industry.

Education, Training, and Certification Programs

For most engineering careers:

  • a bachelor's degree is required;

  • a master's may be recommended for those who specialize in or are interested in management and professional development.

Many students need to participate in a co-op program during their time at university to gain real-world experience in their chosen field.

Education never really stops...engineers need to stay current as technology changes and materials and processes improve over time. Education and training are always important.

Many professional societies offer certifications and coursework to support continuing education for their members. You can check certification programs and choose the best for you.

At the undergraduate level, degrees will cover basic engineering and then specialize in topics such as petroleum engineering systems, physical geology, drilling and production systems, geostatistics, well performance, reservoir fluids, petroleum project evaluation, engineering ethics, and well completion and stimulation.

It's important to choose an engineering degree that has been accredited to major standards.

Job Search Strategies and Networking in the Oil Industry

Before starting a search, you need to ask yourself two questions: "Who am I?" and "Who are they?"

Question #1: "Who am I?"

Who are you as a specialist? Write down all your experience - where you worked, what you did in each position, and what results you achieved. This will help you realize what your background is and remember what you do best.

Then highlight your strengths. You probably have a lot of knowledge and skills - jobs today require a wide range of skills - but what exactly is your strength? Perhaps you are great at connecting with other people. Or is there no one who knows a particular topic better than you?

The third component is the answer to the question, "What do I want?". It is clear that you want to find a job, but what kind of job? In what field, company? Make a list of criteria that are important to you, such as the qualities of a manager, possible prospects, etc.

Question #2: "Who are they?"

Who are the companies or people you want to work with? Think about your future work environment. You will be offering yourself to them as a specialist who will solve certain problems with his work, so it is important to understand what these problems are.

So, you know who you are as a product that is going to enter the labor market. You have decided who they are - hypothetical buyers and employers. Now you need to choose from two job search strategies.

Passive - post your resume on job sites and wait for the employer to write to you. And also look at vacancies from time to time.

An active strategy is to use all available resources for your search: attend specialized events, make useful contacts, and use social networks such as Facebook and LinkedIn.

How does networking work? Networking is the art of building and maintaining relationships with people. In our country, it is often misunderstood. A networker is seen as a person who can approach a stranger, hand them a business card, and start selling them something. But this is not the case. The main rule of competent networking is to be able to tell about yourself and convey your benefits.

Nowadays, it's not easy to choose the profession you like. There is a lot of choice. I thought about my future for a long time, analyzed the advantages and disadvantages of many professions, but finally decided on a specialty related to oil and gas. What can you recommend?

During my internship, I have already had the opportunity to get acquainted with technological operations, learn to work in a team and experience the life of a real oil worker. Analyzing Google data on queries about working on oil platforms, I noticed that the topic remains relevant. Which job search resource is better?
