Recently and over the last decades, the scope of pharmacy practice has a more evolving role into patient-centered care and it aims in improving the health outcomes and quality of life for the patients. The career of pharmacy in the medical sector is noticed to be misunderstood by people who believe that pharmacist’s role is only restricted into dispensing the right medication. Thus, it is important to raise the awareness about the pharmacist’s role among population in which it is much broader in terms of guaranteeing the best health outcome for the patient and proving that patient assessment is an essential part of the pharmaceutical model. The pharmacist’s role nowadays is focused on gathering and evaluating information that is patient-specific in order to identify any possible drug-related problems and formulate patient-centered care plan based on gathered information. In terms of research, pharmacists nowadays have added a lot into the advancement of medicine.
A good pharmacist has key personal factors in addition to qualifications and grades such as good problem-solving, communication skills to be able to manage the complexity of a clinical and research environment. In addition, researchers should have a strong attention to detail during optimization of care plans for patients. They must have the professionalism and ethics and collaboration and must take a leadership role in patient advocacy and possess integrity.
My personal features that qualify me as a candidate are being an ambitious and life-long learner and having the enthusiasm and energy that can enable me to develop a good approach in continuing learning, building knowledge, and gaining different experiences for accomplishing assigned tasks. This is by acting with professionalism and sticking to ethics through my SPEP rotations in terms of communication with patients, preceptors, and staff with good problem-solving skills. I started my journey in the college of pharmacy as a transfer student who insisted to achieve her dream in being a clinical pharmacist one day and did not stop trying to graduate from this college as a pharmacist. Being a part of this program after my long journey in transferring and graduating with a good GPA and going through all assessments successfully with having good grades will make me a good candidate who really appreciates her role in being a clinical pharmacist. This is because I was working on this dream for years and years until my journey is nearly ending with the opportunity to continue learning and having the chance to be a part of this program. I have experience in research as I have had the honor to complete two clinical researches during my undergraduate studies. I had the honor to participate in and complete a clinical research " Key Faculty Perspectives on Patient Safety Content in Undergraduate Healthcare Curricula at Qatar University, A Qualitative Study" in the college of Pharmacy at Qatar University under supervision of Dr. Alla El-Awaisi in Rx course (PHAR 445). In addition, I have recently completed my graduation project that won the first place for poster presentation and it is titled “Understanding Qatar University pharmacy students’ clinical reasoning and decision-making to detect and resolve medication errors: a think-aloud protocol” which is also a qualitative study that was done under the investigation of Dr. Maguy El-Hajj.
In my opinion, all these characteristics and achievements are needed in building a good pharmacist and researcher who contributes in making a revolution and change in the scope of clinical pharmacy practice in Qatar to ensure that clinical pharmacists can practice to full scope among healthcare system.
