The primary duty of a Land Surveyor is to collect data from the field about terrain, land features, boundaries, elevations, as well as natural resources such as oil reserves or mineral deposits. The job also requires knowledge of computer software programs and measuring instruments such as total stations or GPS systems to accurately capture data in an efficient manner. Other duties include creating maps and plans for construction projects or boundary disputes; conducting research related to geographical information systems (GIS); performing calculations; ensuring accurate drawings are produced; maintaining records; and keeping up-to-date with technology advances in the field.
