CV and cover letter tips

Teaching is a wonderful profession. This is a person who has a rare opportunity to influence someone's life and bring out the best in students. But this is a highly competitive environment, and you will need serious qualifications and some experience to get a job. And if this is supplemented with a well-formed resume, consider that the work is in your pocket. Candidates with less experience may also be invited for an interview, but their resumes should impress the employer. So how do you write the perfect teacher resume?

Know Your Audience

Imagine that you are a human resources officer or a school principal. What qualifications, qualities and experience will they be looking for? Most of them will focus on your experience and knowledge of teaching methods. They don't just want a list of your responsibilities at your previous job. Better focus on your accomplishments and the contributions you have made.

Tailor your resume to a specific job

Everyone has a resume template that is suitable for all occasions. Therefore, if time is running out, the thought arises to send it as is, since you recently updated the document, corrected the dates and added the latest changes. But this is not enough - you need to adapt its content to the desired work. Make sure that the experience and qualities you claim make you the right candidate. No need to rewrite everything anew each time; just highlight those transferable skills that are relevant to a particular employer and can impress him.

Your goal is to be the perfect candidate

By posting a vacancy announcement, the employer imagines the image of the ideal candidate in terms of qualifications and experience. Additional requirements may vary. Therefore, if you manage to guess several characteristics that the employer needs, your chances of getting an invitation to an interview will increase significantly.

Use relevant keywords

Your resume should contain educational terminology. This will emphasize your experience in this area. Also, if you apply online, keywords will help your resume get through automated recruitment management systems.

How to Write a Cover Letter for Different Teaching Jobs (Primary School, Secondary School ...)

So, first, you need to outline the resume's framework, then fill it with information. Your resume should contain the following sections.

Contact information

Write your full name, residential address, e-mail and contact phone number. Other information such as age, marital status, nationality, etc. is optional.

Resume Profile

At the top of the resume should be a brief introduction of yourself - a few words about who you are, as well as your qualities for the desired position. This should be your cover letter, condensed to two or three sentences.

Education

Provide a complete, detailed account of your education. Highlight relevant refresher courses, conferences and seminars you have attended. In addition to the bare minimum of teacher education, attending professional events and additional training proves your enthusiasm and commitment to your work.

Work Experience

Describe your work experience and show that it matches the position you want. Instead of just listing responsibilities that can also be repetitive, focus on important accomplishments. Describe in detail your teaching methodology and approach to problem-solving.

Skills

Match your qualifications with the job. To do this, include transferable skills and qualities in your resume. Please provide relevant examples to support this. To make your resume shine, focus on your strengths.

Personal Interests

If you wish, you can add your hobbies and interests. It is better to choose those that are relevant to your profession. Activities such as tutoring, mentoring, coaching, and community services can significantly increase your ranking in the eyes of an employer. Sports-related activities are also suitable, especially if you have achievements (for example, diplomas, awards).

Cover letter example:

Dear Mr Doe,

I am interested in applying for an elementary school teacher position in your school district. As a graduate of XXX College 20XX, I have experience teaching third, fourth, and sixth grades in both suburban and urban school districts. I believe that my teaching experience and passion for community involvement make me an ideal candidate for a teaching position at your school.

I have experience teaching junior high school students in a variety of settings. I am currently teaching third-grade children at a city charter school. As a former education coordinator at a local museum, I also have experience teaching fourth graders at a small suburban school. Your school highlights its unique position as a school that caters to both urban and suburban students, so I think my varied experience will make me useful to your program.

Your school is also committed to engaging students in the wider community. I have a lot of experience incorporating community service projects into my classes. For example, as a student teacher, I led a group of third graders on plant life, and we volunteered at the local community garden. I would like to find ways to integrate service learning into my lesson plans.

My goal is to combine my experience with my ability to be a compassionate, enthusiastic and intelligent teacher who will make a positive contribution to the school district and society at large. I would welcome an interview and hope to hear from you as soon as possible.
