Although, of course, in official institutions, to be honest, they really don't like it when you come to them and speak English. That is, they believe that your sacred duty is to come and talk to them in German. Of course, this is unrealistic when you are in the first months, the first time in Austria, they really like it here, they don't like it, excuse me, they have to speak English. I know people personally who have lived in Austria for 5, 10 years, work as programmers and do not speak German at all. 

Of course, it’s impossible not to talk at all, that is, people know some elementary phrases, but in order to talk, people don’t talk. And at the same time they live well, they have children, they somehow take them to kindergarten, somehow communicate, apparently, with educators, to school, somehow people live without the German language. Although I, frankly, do not understand how this can be done, because even in the same kindergarten, you will have to somehow talk to the teacher, and the teachers, they are mostly young girls. There are, of course, not young people, that is, I would not say that a large percentage of them speak English ... But somehow people live like this. It is interesting, especially for programmers, when a husband, for example, a programmer, and at work all the time speaks English, but his wife, for example, speaks German, and now the wives somehow, apparently, all such questions are solved, and men don't decide. That is, I want to tell you that yes, there are people who live without knowing the German language, and they, apparently, do not have anything special with this.

How to explain your qualifications to employers?

Austria has decided to simplify the rules of employment for foreigners, this has been confirmed by its government. The country is sorely lacking workers. Although, according to the state organization Austria Business Agency (ABA), it already employs about 730 thousand foreign specialists (430 thousand - immigrants from the European Union). However, this is clearly not enough. The total labor shortage in Austria is estimated at 160 thousand people. Local employers have not been able to fill about 60% of these vacancies for six months or more. This is the official data. 

So far, Austria is only at the beginning of a path to liberalize employment for foreigners. Experts do not exclude that the authorities will actively implement the experience of other EU countries.
